An Introduction to Mendeley: A Workshop of Reference Management Software for Lecturers and Students

Citing and referencing information are key elements of academic life. Researchers, lecturers, Teachers, students, and practitioners in academic fields required those skills to produce a trusted academic works. But citing and referencing can be daunting for those who do not understand the principles. In many cases, many of academic works made without proper citation and references that could lead the plagiarism issues. Other than that, those works also made using old and manual techniques without using reference management software which make the process of producing academic works take longer time to organize and write reference styles.

To tackle those issues, International Program on Science Education (IPSE), Faculty of Mathematics and Science Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia conducted a workshop to introduce Mendeley. Mendeley is Mendeley is a free reference manager and academic social network. It helps researchers or academicians to organize their materials, to collaborate with others online, to discover the latest research in their field and find career opportunities.

In this workshop, Ikmanda Nugraha as Mendeley Advisor and also IPSE lecturer delivered his talks about Mendeley to both Lecturers and Students. The workshop consists of two sessions, The First was student’s session and the second was lecturer’s session. There were slightly differences between the sessions. For the student’s session, the workshop began with introduction to plagiarism, academic writing and citing technique (quoting, summarizing and paraphrasing) followed by practical use of the software.

For the lectures session, the workshop emphasized on practical use of the software and the session was conducted in an informal discussion. During the session, it was also discussed about journals in education, trends in education research and international publication.

As an appreciation top all of the participants, at the end of the session, all of the participants were given an official certificate from Mendeley to indicate that the participants had better understand Mendeley and hopefully improve their research skills and workflow. It is also hoped that the participants would produce more academic works in order to contribute to educational research and elevate the number of journal publications in the near future.
