Symposium and National Meeting of Indonesian Association for Science Educators (PPII) 2020 was held in Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Solo, January 11th, 2020. PPII Central Java was appointed as the committee of this event. The event was officially opened by Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Sajidan, M.Si. as Vice Rector for Planning and Collaboration UNS. International Program on Science Education (IPSE) has participated in that event. IPSE was represented by Eliyawati, M.Pd attending the event.

After the opening, the event was followed by a symposium with the theme STEM-based Science Learning with two keynote speakers Prof. Dr. Hj. Anna Permanasari, M.Si from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) and Prof. Dr. Erman, M.Pd. Prof from Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA). This symposium was led by Dr. Sarwanto as Moderator.

Prof. Dr. Hj. Anna Permanasari explained the importance of STEM-based Science Learning in Industrial Revolution 4.0. Industrial development must be accompanied by educational development. Therefore, Sustainability Development Goals (SDG’s) should be developed in the education field. There are several things in education that must be packaged in achieving SDG’S: general education, new literacy, long-life learning, cognitive skills, and Co/Extra curriculum Activities. Moreover, Sustainability literacy must be taught to students through STEM learning so students are expected to be able to face the globalization era. She said that STEM approach makes students have a comprehensive understanding and skills and STEM Approach can raise a good attitude and self-awareness. In addition, she said that the STEM approach teaches us how to protect our environment and can help in minimizing Environmental Issues.

Prof. Dr. Erman, M.Pd delivered the materials related to student’s scientific literacy in Indonesia and responding to PISA result 2018. He said that students ‘interest in learning science has dropped and Indonesian students’ scientific literacy is very low. Throughout Indonesia’s participation in the PISA program, the position of Indonesian students’ scientific literacy was often ranked in the top 5 from the bottom. Not only students’ scientific literacy, but their reading and math skills are also low. Therefore, it should be a concern for all of us to improve students’ scientific literacy in Indonesia.

In the afternoon, the event was continued to the National Meeting of PPII 2020. This meeting was led by Prof. Dr. Hj. Anna Permanasari, M.Si as the chairman of PPII. The itinerary of the meeting was general information, PPII program discussion, and PPII program presentation.
